I made overlapped Pockets Backpack a few days ago. It looks like a simple back pack with pockets outside but actually the making process is not easy. I use hand-sew and sewing machine to make this bag.
This is theΒ overlapped pocket part. What does it mean by overlapped pockets? It’s 2 pockets one on top of another, left and right pocket. When you put in stuff on the left, it can’t be access from the right. The look from outside is simple, only 2 zipper seen, left and right (check out the 3rd picture below).
I always hand-sew the lining side on the zipper. I sew by machine once but I wasn’t satisfied with the result. The lining part become too close to the zipper rail, thus making difficult to open/close the zipper; The lining is stuck on the zipper head. Yet, if I sew not close to the rail, the main/good fabric part doesn’t look good. So, I use sewing machine to attach zipper to main fabric and hand sew to attach lining to the zipper.
This picture show the back part of the bag and the front cover flap. The cover has pocket, too! Take a look the zipper rail there. I use cotton bag strap. I like using it because, it saves my fabric, looks strong, and make the sewing process faster (I don’t have to make strap πππ. I used plastic rings this time. I don’t have any reasoning for that; I just want to use plastic rings. The straps can be adjusted (lengthened and shortened) according to the wearer comfort.
This is the result. See? People might assume, those 2 zippers are for the same pocket. Yet, it’s actually for overlapped pockets. You can not access left pocket by opening the right pocket and vice versa. In short, the zippers have it’s own pocket.
The cover also have zipper and finished with lining, too. So, it’s not as simple as it seems.
I use jeans button to ‘lock’ the cover.
The fabric for this backpack is combination of denim and middle thickness Japanese fabric.
